Flood insurance for homeowners

Homes & real estate

Natural disasters can be spontaneous and unpredictable, which make protecting your home and the things you love a priority. Many homeowners think they will be unaffected by flooding, yet no home is ever entirely safe, and flooding can be emotionally and financially devastating. Be sure you have the necessary information and coverage to protect yourself from flooding and other natural disasters.

Every bank is required by federal law to certify the status of the property as to whether it is in a flood zone, and some banks utilize an independent third party to verify and certify that property used in a mortgage transaction is or is not in a Flood Zone. If the property is in a flood zone, the homeowner is required by federal law to purchase flood insurance to cover the loan amount or up to the maximum amount allowed by the National Flood Insurance Program. If you feel that the certified status of your property is incorrect, there are options for you either to appeal your flood status of your property or to seek a Letter of Map Change (LOMC) directly with FEMA.

Lucky for home owners, most regions have zones where certain disasters tend to occur, but they can still be spontaneous, powerful and unpredictable. The easiest way to protect yourself from flooding and other natural disasters is to be prepared and stay informed. Monitor weather stations, pay attention to local news, and be prepared with a plan. FEMA provides great tips and information for making sure you have the right protection.
